Friends’ Favourites – Stained Glass Window

October 2024

On our new website, Friends’ Favourites highlights items in The Museum Collection or The Guildhall that are a real favourite with our members. This month there is the story of the truly magnificent – the stained glass window in the Ascot Room at the Guildhall!

Installed in 1951 to mark the Festival of Britain and celebrate the bond between Windsor, UK, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, it’s a vibrant display of generosity, friendship, and craftsmanship. The window, framed by portraits of Queen Victoria’s children, Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice, brightens the room even on cloudy days. During a visit in 2019, Mayor Dilkens of Windsor, Ontario, finally saw this hidden gem, a link between our two towns that continues to inspire.

Photo from 2019 is of Brigitte Mitchell (then Chair of the Friends), Mayor Drew Dilkens (Windsor, Ontario) and Sayonara Luxton (then Mayor, Windsor and Maidenhead) in 2019; courtesy of Brigitte Mitchell.
