Current Situation
In December 2023 and January 2024, the Museum faced the most serious threat to its survival since opening in 2011 and was at risk of closure. Currently (December 2024) the Museum is in a better position, having been awarded £65,895 from the Arts Council England’s Museum Renewal Fund for its ‘Celebrating our Royal History’ project, which highlights local history and showcases our royal connections and significant events at Windsor Guildhall.
The grant will ease some of the financial difficulties faced over the last few years. It will allow visitors to learn more about the royal history at the Guildhall, with increased opening days next year. A revamp of the Museum space will enable the wedding of the King and Queen and the civil partnership of Sir Elton John to be better presented. The funding will help provide a better offering for young visitors and create a better web presence. It’s an exciting time!
The Museum seems safe in the short term. The additional funds will enable the Museum to undertake important projects that will grow visitor numbers and strengthen the Museum’s long-term sustainability. The threat to the Museum has been hugely reduced but its long-term future cannot be taken for granted. It may indeed need to be self-financing in due course. Hopefully, the combined efforts of staff, volunteers, residents, and visitors, together with RBWM’s support, will ensure the long-term survival.
