Nestled within the historic Windsor Guildhall, the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum showcases a captivating collection that tells the story of our rich local heritage. Entry to the Museum is currently free to the public. It is open on a Tuesday between 10 am and 4 pm. Why not plan a visit?

With over a hundred intriguing objects on display at the Guildhall, from Stone Age flints and Roman tiles to poignant First World War letters, there’s so much to explore.

You’ll also view a 100,000-year-old mammoth tusk, a model of the Hawker Hurricane designed by Windsor-born Sir Sydney Camm and an original programme from the 1943 Windsor Castle Aladdin Pantomime starring Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret!

The Museum provides an invaluable resource for young and old, both now and in the future. But that is just part of the story – there are thousands more objects held in the Museum’s Archive Store. Plus, the Guildhall itself is steeped in a rich history of royalty and Windsor.

Through the years, the Museum and Friends have enjoyed support from the Royal Family. For nearly 75 years, they have been involved from our first exhibition to both the opening and the reopening of our Museum. We are proud to share that journey in our History of the Museum.

Visitor Information

Visiting Windsor? We have put together some Useful Information covering the location, how to travel and other sights to see such as the Castle, the Crooked House, and the Changing of the Guard. There is also a downloadable map from RBWM.

Exhibitions

The dedicated staff at the Museum continually create captivating Exhibitions that celebrate local history, displayed both within the Museum and outside on the historic Corn Exchange. We explore some of them on a dedicated page.

Guided Tours

Guided tours of the Guildhall are available. These last 30 – 40 minutes are for a small charge of £5, which goes towards the Museum’s upkeep. The Volunteers take the public upstairs to the ornate rooms, which have seen the marriage of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and the civil partnership of Elton John and David Furnish. As you can imagine, these famous rooms have many tales to tell, and our guides will share the best of them. You can pre-book a tour online via the RBWM website.

The Collection

The Collection, now over 70 years old, boasts more than 13,000 items. With hundreds of fascinating objects on display at the Guildhall, there’s plenty to explore. And that’s just the beginning – thousands more treasures are meticulously preserved in the Museum Archive Store, waiting to be discovered as we continue to catalogue and expand the Collection.

Sponsor an Object

In July 2025, with financial support from The Friends, the Museum launched its Sponsor an Object scheme. Forty unique objects from the collection were carefully selected so that you can choose from to sponsor. In return, you will be sent a digital certificate with an image of your chosen object. Your name will also be displayed on the online sponsors board (unless you opt out).

The Museum Staff

The Museum is lucky to have such skilled and enthusiastic Staff who are history experts in their own right. There have been recent changes both to the team and to their hours, but their devotion and energy still come through. From curating to creating exhibitions, both physical and online, answering questions, hosting at the Museum, to Certification Management, to grant applications, to … they are real stars!

Whilst the Museum opening hours are now restricted, the team continues to work behind the scenes at the various locations, and remotely at home. History and the Collection, do not stand still.

Accreditation

The Accreditation panel appointed by the Arts Council England have agreed to award the Museum with the status of Provisional Accreditation, which is a great achievement given all the difficulties they have faced over recent months. The Provisional award is for 12 months to give them time to complete the required actions. The actions requested relate to financial sustainability and planning, progress against documentation and audience development. The Museum Staff are working on these behind the scenes.
